SectionAl Gannett Saturday, Westchester November 24, Newspapers 1984 Crowded church plans expansion Obituaries By Dave Sheingold Staff Writer The Little Friendship Baptist Church has outgrown its home. Since the church moved into a building at Ninth Avenue and Fifth Street in 1955, its membership has increased from less than 100 members to about 200 families. "On Sundays, we're packed. The pews only seat 130 to 140 people," said the Rev. Joe L.

Brown, the church's pastor. "We've doubled our size since March, so we have to put chairs in the aisles and along the sides for extra seating." To make room, the church now plans to spend $250,000 on an expansion project. Brown said the church has raised $200,000 for the project. Brown said the 60-year-old building would be enlarged and remodeled, a project approved earlier this year by the city Planning Board. The plans call for a 14-foot extension in the rear and a 20-foot extension on one side, which will increase the size of the building from 3,600 to 6,600 square feet.

Brown said construction was scheduled to start in the next two weeks. Inside the 2-story church, more pews and a new baptismal font will be installed; the kitchen, bathrooms and meeting hall will be enlarged and modernized; and the pew arrangement will be redesigned to accommodate almost 400 people. Outside, the worn shingles and a Artist's rendition of planned expansion at the Little Friendship Baptist Church peeling white paint will be replaced with beige stucco walls. The church also will be made accessible to the handicapped. "The roof and steeple are staying, but overall, it's going to look completely said Ted D'Amore of D'Amore Design Studios in Mount Vernon, the project's architect.

"It will have a much nicer Willie Butts, chairman of the church's board of directors, said the church first decided to expand about 15 years ago, but did not begin a serious fund raising effort until about three years ago. When the church hired the 41- year-old Brown in March, the fund raising picked up further and the membership doubled from about 100 to 200, said Butts. The congregation's weekly donations at the Sundays also have risen, from about $600 to $1,500, said Butts. "He's an excellent preacher," said Butts. "He draws people into the church.

People believe in him." Brown said that during constructon the church would remain open for services every Sunday, except possibly one.By the summer, the congregants should have a new church, he said. One thing from the existing church, however, will remain the south wall with a 20-foot tall cross facing Fifth Street. "That will stay, for memories," said Brown.
