Conor McGregor is scheduled to return to a UFC ring for the first time in nearly three years at UFC 303 to take on Michael Chandler in the main event in Las Vegas.

However, the bout has been thrown into doubt after McGregor cancelled their launch press conference in Dublin.

The promotion and Chandler have since guaranteed the fight will take place, and promotional materials have been posted.

The Irishman suffered a gruesome broken leg that resulted in a TKO defeat to Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in July 2021 in his last MMA bout.

Did McGregor retire?

Despite taking lengthy breaks between fights in recent years, he has insisted that he likely will never retire from the sport.

He has claimed to have hung up his gloves multiple times, but in an interview with the Daily Mail last year noted that those retirements were “political”.

Quotes about Conor McGregor

Dana White in a recent appearance on the Flagrant Podcast: “I will tell you this and I don’t ever like to compare people to Muhammad Ali because to me he’s the f***ing, you know, and f*** what he did in fighting, just as a human, what that guy accomplished.

“But I don’t give a f*** what anybody says: Ali, Conor, both level when it comes to mental warfare. The two best of all time when it comes to mental warfare.”

Sean O’Malley in a recent interview with MMAFighting: “I tried [to hate him]. I was like f*** Conor, but it is what it is. I think he realized what he said was stupid. I don’t know why he tried putting me and Ryan Garcia in the same category, saying Ryan Garcia missed weight and it made him mad about me.

“It just didn’t make sense. I think he kind of realized what he said was stupid and then just backed himself into a corner.

“We’ll see [who wins between him and Chandler]. It’s hard for me not to [root for him], if Conor goes out there, and knocks him out, it would be wild. It would just build another big Conor fight and the more Conor fights, the better.”

Nate Diaz vs Conor McGregor

Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz famously fought twice, at UFC 196 and UFC 202.

The American was drafted in as a late replacement when his rival was unable to fight Rafael Dos Anjos for the lightweight title and stunned the world as he handed him his first UFC loss by rear naked choke.

However, McGregor had jumped up two weight classes on short notice in order to face Diaz, who couldn’t make the lightweight limit on time. When he adjusted to the weight properly for their rematch, he won a relatively comfortable decision.

They are both keen to have the trilogy and have touted a potential September date. However, Diaz is currently a free agent and enjoying life in the boxing world where he fought Jake Paul and is now about to rematch Jorge Masvidal.

Max Holloway vs Conor McGregor

Conor McGregor and Max Holloway fought as youngsters in 2014, with the Irishman coming out on top in a gruelling Boston outing.

He tore his ACL early on in the bout and had to give a rare display of his grappling to eke out a tight decision victory.

It was the only time during McGregor’s initial run in the promotion he was taken the distance, and there is a keen interest in a rematch between the pair.

Since that fight, Holloway emerged as one of the greatest featherweights of all time.

Conor McGregor vs Eddie Alzarez

Conor McGregor defeated Eddie Alvarez to win the lightweight title at UFC 205 in November of 2016 at Madison Square Garden in New York.

The event was historic for several reasons but especially as it was the first time any UFC fighter held two belts simultaneously.

It was also the first show for the sport’s leader since it was legalised that year in the state of New York.

The Big Apple was one of the last places in America to keep MMA banned, but that was overturned in 2016 and the UFC has since made MSG a regular staple of their schedule.

McGregor: ‘I apologize to nobody’ speech

After his win over Alvarez at UFC 205, McGregor took to the microphone to deliver one of his most infamous interviews.

After appearing as though he was going to drop his persona and share a moment of vulnerability, he instead dropped an all-time great promo.

The way the moment flowed worked perfectly, as the promotion found him a second belt so he could finally get his chance to hold both the featherweight and lightweight titles.

He was quickly stripped of the 145lb strap.

McGregor vs Poirier trilogy

After returning from injury in 2014 against Diego Brandao in a stunning Dublin homecoming, McGregor made a big step up as he faced Poirier at UFC 178.

The pair had a bitter build-up and the Irishman quickly knocked out the gritty American.

Over the following few years, they both grew in the sport and became beloved names, with McGregor the biggest in the sport. When he was looking to return in 2021 he pushed for the American to get a shot at the rematch.

The pair fought at UFC 257 in Abu Dhabi, and Poirier stunned everyone when he knocked McGregor out cold for the first time in his career in the second round.

They agreed to a trilogy, but all the sweetness around the first rematch was gone as a bitter feud ended in McGregor breaking his leg.

McGregor vs Poirier at UFC 178

The initial meeting between McGregor and Poirier was a very heated one. The American famously declared he had never hated an opponent more than his rival, and that boiled over on fight night as he was caught clean in the first round and knocked out.

It is worth noting this fight took place at featherweight, while their next two were lightweight bouts. It was also an undercard three-rounder, not a five-round main event.

Poirier vs McGregor at UFC 257

By the time their second fight rolled around in 2021, things were completely different. The pair had initially verbally agreed to a sparring match exhibition in Dublin, which would be promoted by McGregor himself.

However, that was axed by boss Dana White, who instead put together an event on the infamous Yas Island, known to fans as ‘Fight Island’. Poirier won by knockout in the second round to level up the scores at one apiece after a friendly build-up.

McGregor vs Poirier at UFC 264

For the trilogy, their bitterness returned. After Poirier accused McGregor of not paying a massive charity donation to his Good Fight Foundation, they began to hate one another again and the Irishman went off on his rival in the build-up.

McGregor came out of the traps aggressively in the opening round, but with seconds to go on the clock he checked a kick and while stepping back snapped his leg.

He survived the round, but it was stopped between rounds and he left the arena on a stretcher, all the while screaming abuse at Poirier

Conor McGregor vs Floyd Mayweather

The draw of Conor McGregor isn’t exclusive to MMA either. In 2017, while still the two-weight world champion, he went over to the boxing ring to face the legendary Floyd Mayweather in the biggest crossover fight of all time.

McGregor and Mayweather had a legendary build-up that included a world media tour and drew the second biggest pay-per-view and live gate in boxing history.

The boxer struggled early but turned it on and by round ten had landed a stoppage.

McGregor vs ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone

After over a year of inactivity; at the start of 2020 McGregor returned to the cage against the legendary Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone.

The pair were super friendly in the lead-up but that all stopped in the cage as McGregor put on a vintage performance in landing the KO within 40 seconds.

McGregor vs Khabib

The highest-selling fight in UFC history was Conor McGregor vs Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 in October of 2018.

During an intense build-up, the Russian slapped Artem Lobov; then a close friend and teammate of McGregor, who flew to America to confront him and ended up under arrest.

Though the lead-up was insane, the fight itself was vintage Nurmagomedov as he dominated early before a close third round the Irishman won.

In the fourth, he locked on a choke and defeated his rival, before a brawl ensued between their two teams.

Conor McGregor and Ryan Garcia

Conor McGregor appears to have fallen out with Ryan Garcia over the boxer’s failed drug test following his fight with Devin Haney.

The relationship had been good, with the Irishman even visiting him in his dressing room after last year’s fight with Gervonta Davis.

But in a recent tweet-and-delete, he slammed Garcia for testing positive for ostarine and told the American to never speak to him again. He also offered to fly him to Dublin for a bare-knuckle boxing sparring session.

McGregor and Jake Paul

Since 2020, YouTube star and boxer Jake Paul has been calling for a fight with Conor McGregor, with little response from the Irishman.

He offered $50million for a crossover clash, but there was never any serious talks.

Paul is still keen on the fight but appears to have moved on from his feud with the MMA world. He has also signed with UFC’s rival promotion PFL, so it appears unlikely they will come together in the ring or the cage.

Conor McGregor coach John Kavanagh

The man who is credited with making Conor McGregor the fighter he is today is SBG Ireland boss John Kavanagh.

The Dubliner trained him from his early days moving over from the boxing ring as a youngster, and brought him all the way to the UFC.

McGregor has never left SBG Ireland, even during his travels around the world, and has stayed loyal to Kavanagh throughout his career.

The Irish trainer also works with the likes of Kiefer Crosbie and Johnny Walker as well as a host of Bellator and PFL fighters.

Conor McGregor tattoos

Conor McGregor has a whole host of tattoos, most of which he got after achieving UFC fame.

The Irishman has his own name tattooed, as well as a large gorilla on his chest which he got after becoming a top fighter in the UFC.

For his appearance in Road House, he had to spend hours a day covering his tattoos and being repainted by the film crew. His character Knox had similar but different tattoos.

Conor McGregor toy figure

There are a number of Conor McGregor toys and action figures. He has been made into two Funko Pops and an action figure.

There are also a number of custom fan-made figures and bobbleheads of the Irishman available across the web.
