He was born on December 28, 1927, to the late Nelson and Hazel Reid in Buchanan, Va. Lanvan was a veteran of the United States Army and a member of High Street Baptist Church.

and Neva Himes. He was a member of Grandin Court Baptist Church. Joe was born in Hominy, and grew up in Seminole, Okla. Serving inthe United States Air Force during the Korean War, he was transferred to Roanokefor his tour of duty. There he met his wife of 61 years, Erma Campbell Himes.

Hecompleted his education at Virginia Tech where he was president of Alpha KappaPsi (business fraternity) and a member of Omicron Delta Kappa. He retired at theage of 55, in 1985, from Shenandoah Life Insurance Company where he was a VicePresident and Controller. Joe and Erma enjoyed many hours at their vacation homeon Smith Mountain Lake. He is also survived by his daughters, Kendall Himes Preas and husband, J.C., KerryHimes Irvin and husband, Doug; grandchildren, Caroline and Harry Preas; also fourIrvin step- grandchildren and two Irvin step-great grandchildren residing in his brother, Gerald G. HIMES Joe Wayland John Gregory Reed, 56, of Salem, known as Greg to friends and family, died suddenly and unexpectedly Friday, October 24, 2014, serving the community he loved. Born in Lafayette, Indiana in 1958, he was preceded in death by his father, John Everett Reed and mother, Marlene Bouse Reed.

He is survived by his wife, Beth Ritter Reed; sons, Joseph Cinquemani, Kaleb Reed, and Chance Reed of Salem; his sister, Teresa Parry and husband, Tim Parry and their daughter, Bess Platt and husband, Stephen Platt; daughter, Brooke Parry and son, Jacob Parry and wife Kelly; sister, Judi Reed Anderson and her husband, Paul Anderson, and sons, Drew, Tyler, and Blake. Greg earned a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Virginia Tech in 1980. He spent themajority of his career as a utility engineer for the City of Roanoke and the Western Virginia Water Authority, where he served as Director of Engineering Services. He was a fearless and adventurous soul who loved to run, hang-glide, ride motorcycles, hike, ski and camp.

He rode across America by bicycle when he was only 18. Greg was also driven, competing in many marathons, triathlons, and century bicycle races. He overcame a serious battle with non-Hodgkins lymphoma andwas an 18 year cancer survivor. He was a loving husband, devoted father, kind big brother, committed friend, excellent engineer, and dedicated public servant. A godly man in the best sense, he was ever humble, deeply faithful, and never passive.

He worked tirelessly to help others in need or to do whatever was needed at his beloved West SalemBaptist Church. Greg had awarmgenuine smile and was not just friendly, but a true friend to so many. Davis will be sadly missed for his mechanic and body work, and his special love for building race cars. She was a member of Fairview Church of the Brethren where she served as a Deaconess and Sunday School Teacher. Mrs. Hodges was born on October 14, 1914, a daughter of the late James O.

and Annie S. Jordan; and was also preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Alvin two brothers; four sisters; one daughter, Elsie Young; two sons-in- law; and one great-great-granddaughter. Surviving are her daughters, Francis H. Broce (Jim), Rebecca H. Preston (Alvah), Betty H.

Hall, Billie H. Hodges, Patricia H. Law (Lewis), Doris H. Buckner (Fred) and Helen H. Bennett (Jimmy).

She is also survived by one sister, Doris J. Cumbie and many nieces; and nephews. In addition she is survived by 16 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great- grandchildren. She was born in Monterey, on April 18, 1929, a daughter of the late Harold Bump andMildred Gill Bump. Kathryn was a communicant of Resurrection Catholic Church. She also retired from Corning Corporation with 28 years of service as the Process Engineering Secretary.

Kathryn and her husband, Clint, moved to the SML area in 1984 establishing the Holland-Duncan Bed and Breakfast which later made the National and State Historical Registry. She devoted much of her time to the establishment of several local charity events and causes through Resurrection Catholic Church; Joyous Junk, Wednesday Club, the annual golf outing, and many churchmusical events. She spent timewith the Discovery Shop at SML, and various other local gift shops. Kathryn was also an active member of the Franklin County Bicentennial Committee. She enjoyed decorating and antique restoration as well.

Kathryn is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 38 years, George Clinton Shay; three step children, Lucinda Justice of Lancaster, Robert Shay and his wife, Suzanne of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Stephen Shay of Chatham; seven step grandchildren, Jeff Marshall and his wife, Elaine, Tom Downey, Pat Downey, Michael Shay, Taylor Shay, Eric Merola and his wife, Kate, and P.J. Merola; three great-grandchildren, Megan Marshall, Noah Marshall, and Carter Shay; five nieces, Debi Brown, MelodyVance, Alice Smith, Mellie Pouwels and Bibi Miller; two nephews, Eric Bump and Joe Pouwels; a brother-in- law, Dr. JohnVillahermosa; andmany friends.
