DIGEST Fairhope resident found, charged al hour. Home. FAIRHOPE Fellow antiques dealers hoping to recoup nearly $2 million in personal loans they made to Confederate relics expert Richard "Sonny" Neville Jr.

are no longer wondering where he is. After nearly eight weeks on the lam, Neville, 51, was arrested Monday afternoon in a Mississippi coast motel room, about 100 miles from the home and Fairhope antiques business that he quietly abandoned Sept. 30. A Waveland, motel employee recognized Neville's name from newspaper stories of his disappearance and contacted police, said Fairhope officer Chris Browning. Neville, who remained in a Mississippi jail Wednesday, faces a charge of theft by deception based on a complaint from a Civil War collector in Nashville, who said he gave Neville $15,000 in merchandise to sell on consignment.

Officer Browning said he expects more charges to follow. Neville had a shining reputation that earned him the trust of collectors nationwide. That trust led some collectors to loan Neville money at times with just a handshake as collateral. Neville, however, was sliding down the slope of a gambling addiction and losing the loans. Dees addresses Oklahoma students TULSA, Okla.

Civil rights attorney Morris Dees says a lawsuit he brought against the United Klan of America taught him how love can bridge gaps. Mr. Dees spoke Wednesday night to several hundred people at the University of Tulsa. Diversity makes America great, he told the crowd. "All of us, regardless of race, religion or culture, basically want the same things," he said.

"We want a house in a safe neighborhood, a good job, and a good future for our kids." Mr. Dees described how the mother of a black murder victim in Mobile forgave the man convicted of killing her son. Mr. Dees sued the United Klan of America in 1981 for inciting the violence that resulted in the lynching. "It is easy to love your parents, brothers and sisters, a close friend, but it is not so easy to love and understand someone of a different sexual orientation, culture, or even someone who lives on the other side of town," Mr.

Dees said. Mr. Dees spoke about his career amid tight security and a brief interruption by a self-described white supremacist leader. Dennis Mahon shouted, "That is genocide," when Mr. Dees told the audience early in his speech that whites would be the minority in the United States by 2015.

Mahon continued to shout as he was escorted from the lecture hall by Tulsa police officers and members of Mr. Dees' security detail. While Mahon was being taken away, Dees said Mahon was associated with the White Aryan Resistance Movement, and that his law firm won a $12.5 million judgment against the group in 1984. Fired police chief offered other post burn, Sr. Chief Gwethalyn Averhart will be offered another position in city government, city officials said Thursday.

Chief Averhart, the only black female police chief in Alabama and one of only two women chiefs in the state, remains on her job for now. She has been told she will be replaced next week whether she takes the other position or not, Mayor Ronald Williams and two members of the council said. The council met Tuesday night in executive session but did not formally vote to hire a new chief. Instead, the council accepted Mayor Williams' suggestion that Chief Averhart be named officer for the city. Chief Averhart has indicated she will accept the Williams said Thursday, but he has been unable to reach her since Tuesday to complete the arrangement.

Council members Rozell Chappell Jr. and Mae Doris Williams said Thursday that all five members of the council have agreed that Chief Averhart should be replaced and given the new position. Chief Averhart was sick Wednesday and out of town Thursday, Mayor Williams said, so he has been unable to determine if she has agreed to the reassignment. From staff and wire reports.
