When the good folks atReames®asked me if I would be interested in partnering with them again to create another recipe using their Frozen Egg Noodles, I was super excited. (Psst… scroll to the very bottom of this post to enter to a $50 Visa Card Giveaway from our friends at Reames!)

I have always loved the homemade-like hearty texture of their egg noodles and we use them in sooo many of our comfort food dishes. Holiday staples around here like our Slow Cooker Chicken and Noodles (and the Electric Pressure Cooker Version) and our Slow Cooker Beef and Noodles (and the Electric Pressure Cooker Version) are so simple to throw together when all you need to do is grab a bag of their frozen noodles out of the freezer. (Psst… if you want to check out a great non-crock pot recipe for Chicken Noodle Soup using their noodles, check it out here.)

The best part is that even though Reames is doing the work for ya, you still get that same great homemade taste. The Reames folks say that is because the freezing process (as opposed to the dry noodles you find on the shelf) allow them to use the same ingredients you do at home: Flour, Eggs and Water. So instead of thin rubber band-like noodles, you get those fork tender thick noodles that we all love! And, I LOVE that they hold up great when we add them to our slow cooker recipes.

I haven’t tried this with chicken gravy. It would change the flavor a bit, but it might work. If you give it a try, let us know how it goes!

The chicken is killer, but the noodles got mushy. Next time, I’ll cook the noodles separately and mix the chicken in before serving. Thanks for the great chicken recipe!

FAQs

Why did my noodles turn to mush in the crockpot? ›

Why did my noodles turn to mush in the crockpot? One of the most common reasons for mushy noodles is overcooking. Pasta, including noodles, has a relatively short cooking time compared to other ingredients typically prepared in a crockpot.

How long does it take for noodles to get soft in crock pot? ›

Cover and cook on low for 3 to 4 hours or on high for 1 to 2 hours. Check at the 3 (on low) or 1 (on high) hour mark to ensure the pasta does not over cook. To check for doneness, use a fork to pull a “test” noodle from the center of the slow cooker. Once it is tender, the pasta is done.

Can you cook uncooked pasta in a slow cooker? ›

You can use slow cookers to make pasta as long as you don't mix the pasta in with the sauce and leave it sitting in the slow cooker for an extended period of time. Doing so will result in pasta that is mushy, soggy and unappetizing. For best results, keep the pasta separate until serving.

How do you keep chicken from getting tough in a crock pot? ›

Don't Overcook the Chicken.

You can overcook chicken in a slow cooker. If the chicken is cooked too long, it will become dry and tough. Check your chicken for doneness early, especially if it is one of your first times making it.

How to keep noodles from getting mushy in a crockpot? ›

Broth-based slow cooker dinners need their dry pasta added at just the right moment — add the pasta too early and your noodles will be mushy before they get to the table. Adding dry pasta 30 to 4o minutes before serving means you'll have perfectly cooked pasta in your soup.

Can you put dry pasta in sauce to cook? ›

By skipping the separate boiling of the pasta and instead adding the dried noodles straight to the sauce, you can make a weeknight-friendly meal in just one pot. Bonus: It makes the pasta more flavorful, too.

What to do if my noodles won't get soft? ›

If you've just dumped the water and discovered that the pasta is still crunchy, the easiest thing to do is simply put it back in boiling water. When you do this, it's important that you stay by the stove the entire time, testing the pasta every 30-60 seconds to make sure you don't end up overcooking it.

Does pasta get harder or softer the longer you cook it? ›

As you get close to the end of your estimated cooking time, taste the pasta. If it is done, it should have a nice al dente bite and taste like pasta. If it is undercooked, it will be too hard and chewy. Overcook it and your noodles will be limp and soggy.

How long does dry pasta take to cook? ›

Most dried ribbons of pasta such as linguine, spaghetti and tagliatelle take between 8-10 mins. Shorter, thicker pasta shapes like bows or penne take 10-12mins and fresh pasta such as ravioli and tortellini will be done between 3-5mins.

How do you thicken pasta sauce in a slow cooker? ›

A cornstarch slurry is a mixture of a cold liquid with cornstarch. It is used as a thickening agent, and is particularly common in Asian sauces. As a rule of thumb, dissolve 2 parts cold water and 1 part cornstarch. Add the slurry to your sauce as it simmers in the slow cooker.

Can you cook pasta in any liquid? ›

Cooking pasta in broth or stock works just as well as cooking it in water and is an excellent way to add subtle, savory flavor to your noodles. Pasta is often considered a plain ingredient used as the base for more boldly flavored sauces. But, using this method, you can make the pasta itself shine.

Is it better to cook chicken on high or low in the crockpot? ›

For optimal results, it's generally recommended to cook chicken on the low setting in a crockpot. This slower cooking method allows the chicken to become more tender and absorb flavors, resulting in a juicier and more flavorful dish compared to using the high setting.

Why is my chicken so rubbery after crockpot? ›

In addition, chicken breast has less fat and can become dry (chewy or rubbery) if cooked for too long. Without moisture, the protein fibers in the chicken become elastic.

Does chicken get more tender the longer you cook it in the crock pot? ›

Slow cooking uses moist heat. The slow cooker is best for meats that have a lot of connective tissue and that are very tough (and typically fairly inexpensive). The connective tissue is turned to gelatin after slow cooking in moist heat for several hours. That is why tough meats become “fork tender” in the slow cooker.

Why did my homemade pasta turn to mush? ›

If you use a pot that's not large enough, the water temperature will begin to drop. This will result in clumpy, mushy pasta. Additionally, this will create a higher starch-to-water ratio, which causes the pasta to stick together.

Why do my noodles feel mushy? ›

Before you try to fix your pasta, you'll need to figure out whether it's overcooked or undercooked. Pasta that is soft and mushy is usually overcooked, while if it's crunchy and hard, this is a good indication that you haven't cooked it for long enough.

How do you revive mushy noodles? ›

Heat the olive oil in a skillet and add your overcooked pasta. Gently sauté over medium heat for a few minutes until the pasta's texture has firmed up. The whole process takes less than 10 minutes and you'll know it is done when the edges of the pasta have started to crisp and light browning has begun.

Why did my rice noodles turn to mush? ›

The #1 reason why your rice noodle stir fries are a soggy mess is that you're cooking them before cooking them. What I mean is that people often boil the noodles and cook them to perfection, and THEN they put them into the pan.
