Ready to start dipping? Keep reading for the simple recipe, plus lots of helpful tips!

Ingredients

You need two simple ingredients to make these heart shaped chocolate covered strawberries:

  • Strawberries - Of course, fresh strawberries are a must! While you can technically use any strawberry, berries with a tapered point will make the best hearts.
  • Chocolate - Choose your fave chocolate ... anything from milk chocolate to dark chocolate works. I used this Lindt 70% Dark Chocolate, which is one of my favorite easy-to-find chocolates.

This recipe is naturally vegetarian, and depending on the type of chocolate you use, you can easily make it vegan, dairy free, and / or gluten free, too (check out the Variations section below for tips).

You'll Also Need

To prep the berries, you'll need a small, sharp knife (such as a paring knife) and a cutting board. You'll also need a small bowl to melt the chocolate in your microwave. (If you make a lot of chocolate treats, adouble boileris worth investing in.)I also used these bamboo skewers. Grab a couple baking sheets (theseCirculon sheet pansare my fave!), andparchment paperfor lining them, too.

How to Make Chocolate Strawberry Hearts

These Chocolate Covered Strawberry Hearts couldn't be easier to make! You'll find a detailed recipe card below, but here's an overview of the steps:

  1. Prep strawberries. Start by washing and drying the strawberries, then make the strawberry hearts by cutting a small v-shape into the stem end of the strawberries. Once you've done that, cut the berries in half, and place them on a layer of paper towel (cut side down).
  2. Skewer berries. This step is optional, but inserting a bamboo skewer makes dipping easier, and serving the strawberries extra fun. Tip: Strawberries can be a little slippery. Don't push the skewer too far into the berry, and once it's in don't move it.
  3. Melt chocolate. Break the chocolate bar into small pieces, then place the pieces in a small bowl. Microwave the chocolate for 30 seconds, then mix. Continue microwaving the chocolate in 10 second intervals, stirring very well between each interval, until it's melted and smooth.
  4. Dip in chocolate. Holding the strawberry by skewer, carefully dip it into the melted chocolate. If you didn't skewer the berries, use a fork to lower them into the chocolate. Tip: You can dip the berries all the way into the chocolate, or partially. I like to leave a little of the strawberry showing.
  5. Let chocolate harden. Once dipped, place the strawberries on a parchment paper lined baking sheet (you may need a couple). Then refrigerate (or freeze) the berries until the chocolate has hardened (about 20 to 30 minutes in the refrigerator, or 10 minutes in the freezer).

Wasn't that easy? And you won't believe how delicious these Chocolate Strawberry Hearts are! Make them for Valentine's Day, or any time you're craving a sweet treat.

Variations

Feel like getting creative with these Chocolate Dipped Berries? Here are some simple ideas to inspire you:

  • White Chocolate - If you're a white choc fan, dip the strawberries in melted white chocolate chips. You could even do a combo of both white and dark!
  • Decorated - Once you've dipped the strawberries, you can add other decorations, like drizzles or sprinkles. Check out my Chocolate Covered Strawberries recipe for inspiration and tips.
  • Whole Berries - If you'd prefer, you can dip whole berries, rather than cutting them in half.
  • Extract- Add a little extra flavor by stirring in ¼ teaspoon ofvanilla, almond, ororange extract into the chocolate.
  • Vegan + Dairy Free - To make this recipe vegan / dairy free, use a vegan chocolate, such as thisLindt Vegan Chocolate Bar,Lovo Oat Milk Chocolate Bar, or thisTheo Dark Chocolate Bar.
  • Gluten Free - Pure cacao is gluten free, but it's blended with other ingredients to make chocolate, and there's also a risk of cross-contamination. ThisGuittard Chocolateis a tasty GF option you'll love!

Serving Suggestions

The cute Chocolate Strawberry Hearts are perfect for Valentine's Day (and Galentine's Day), but you can make them any time you're craving strawberries + chocolate! Serve them as a simple, but scrumptious snack or a fun dessert, or use them to garnish other desserts (like cakes and cupcakes). You could even add a few to your yogurt and granola for breakfast!

Storage

The strawberries will have the best taste and texture when eaten the same day they're made. However, you can store any leftovers in an airtight container in your refrigerator. I recommend eating them within one to two days, because they won't stay fresh long.

Ingredients

  • 10 strawberries
  • 1 (3.5-ounce / 100 gram)bar dark chocolate bar

Instructions

  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.

  • Wash and dry strawberries. Use fingers to pluck off leaves.

  • Slice a small v-shape in the stem-end of the strawberry to create a heart shape. Cut strawberries in half, then place cut side down on a paper towel.

  • Carefully push a skewer into each strawberry half.

  • Break chocolate bar into small pieces, then transfer to a small bowl. Microwave for 30 seconds, then mix. Continue microwaving at 10 second intervals, stirring well in between, until chocolate is melted and smooth.

  • Dip strawberries in chocolate. Allow excess chocolate to drip off, then place berries cut side down on parchment lined baking sheet. Repeat with remaining strawberries.

  • Refrigerate strawberries until chocolate has hardened, about 20 to 30 minutes (or freeze for 10 minutes).

  • Serve immediately or refrigerate for up to two days. Enjoy!

Notes

I'd recommend buying an extra chocolate bar or two. That way, if you're a little short on chocolate (or want to cover more berries), you'll have a backup bar.

You can use any kind of chocolate for this recipe, but I prefer dark chocolate. I used a Lindt 70% Cocoa Bar, but thisGhirardelli 86% Cacao Bar would also work great, if you like super dark chocolate.

Using the skewers is optional, but it makes the berries easier to dip and more fun to serve. If you don't want to use skewers, carefully dip the berries in the chocolate with a fork instead.
