THE BEGINNING OF A PASSIONATE ART LESSON JOURNEY
I am Lauren and I’ve been teaching high school art for 25 years. I truly believe that we perform our best and shine the most when we feel understood, valued, and as though we are able to give the people around us the best versions of ourselves.
WHEN WE FEEL GOOD ON THE INSIDE, IT IS REFLECTED ON THE OUTSIDE.
Teaching art for 25 years has been an odyssey of creativity, resilience, and, of course, the joy of seeing young minds express themselves through art. The early years were a dream—small classes, students diving deep into their creativity, and a sense of profound connection.
CHANGES AND CHALLENGES TEACHING ART
As the years went by, the landscape of education shifted. My school grew, graduation requirements changed, and intricate academic programs altered the course schedule. Suddenly, I found myself with larger classes, combined levels, and limited time for the individual attention that once defined my teaching style.
THE MOMENT OF REALIZATION: I NEEDED HELP
One day, the realization hit—I missed those deep connections. I missed being able to give each student the attention they deserved. The constraints of time were limiting the magic I wanted to create in my classroom.
THE SEARCH FOR SOLUTIONS TO ART CLASSROOM FRUSTRATIONS
I began to search for ways to bridge the gap. I wanted to find a way to maintain that personal touch despite the challenges. The struggles were real:
- The Time-Consuming Repeats
Students missing classes for various reasons led to constant repetition of project steps.
- The Unavailable Art Teacher
Demonstrating for one level meant being unavailable for others.
- The Eternal Material Hunt
No matter how organized, materials would mysteriously vanish, causing chaos.
- The Lengthy Art Demos
Demonstrations took up precious time that could be spent on actual creating.
EPIPHANY: THE NOT STRESSED ART TEACHER SOLUTION WITHIN
Then came the ‘aha’ moment—I needed to look within myself for the solutions. The answer wasn’t outside; it was inside. I couldn’t change the structure of my classes, but I could change how I managed them.
