"Developing Personal Visual Archetypes"
July 8-9, 2024

Often, Southern folklife is represented visually as a whole in redundant cliches. The repainted tropes strip away all meaning, beauty and dignity, and unfortunately, result in a loss of interest and respect, with the real danger of having no societal contribution. Nonney shares new visual archetypes that are based on specifics – regional folklife, folklore and indigenous flora and fauna, but with an added personal twist. These twists reclaim individuality, and use modernism coupled with tradition to create a new depiction of Southern Art. Create your own new archetypes influenced by her presentation.

FAQs

How do you prepare a collage by mixed media? ›

For mixed media collage, use scraps of paper from newspapers, magazines or catalogues and work with thin layers. The secret for a smooth surface is to place gesso or a thin coat of acrylic over the top afterwards (you can thank us later).

What are the 6 major types of mixed media? ›

There are six major types of mixed media. They are collage, assemblage, sculpture, installation art, altered book art, and wet-and-dry media art.

What is the difference between mixed media art and collage? ›

Collage style typically uses a lot of different materials with the focus on creating a visually appealing spread using cut-and-paste techniques. While mixed media art journaling combines a variety of mediums, such as paints, markers, and ink, to create a unique, one-of-a-kind page.

What is the most common technique used in mixed media artwork? ›

This is by far one of the most popular types of mixed-media art. Collage art lets you take all sorts of ephemera like paper, fabric, photographs, newspaper clippings, etc., and stick them onto a supporting surface. You can also incorporate acrylic techniques in this mixed media art form by incorporating paint.

How do I start mixed media art? ›

Layer with Paint: Begin by applying a base layer of acrylic paint or watercolor. Experiment with blending colors and creating gradients. Add Collage Elements: Use collage materials like magazine clippings, fabric, or textured paper to add interest and depth. Secure them with adhesive or gel medium.

Is mixed media art or craft? ›

Mixed media painting is an art form that combines materials and techniques to create unique works. Benefits include creative freedom, skill building advantages, and exploration of new ideas.

What qualifies as mixed media in art? ›

Mixed media is a type of visual art that combines more than one medium or material. This can take many forms, but the three most common are collages, assemblages, and sculptures. Many mixed media artworks feature different materials such as paint, fabric, paper, and found objects.

What famous artist use mixed media? ›

The use of mixed media began around 1912 with the cubist collages and constructions of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, and has become widespread as artists developed increasingly open attitudes to the media of art. Essentially art can be made of anything or any combination of things.

What do you call an artist who uses multiple mediums? ›

Many of us use the term “multidisciplinary artist” to describe our practice if we combine a variety of disciplines together (think sculpture, installation and sound for example).

Can watercolor go over acrylic? ›

Watercolor is pigment suspended in a binder usually of gum arabic, glycerin and a humectant… this will adhere to acrylic…but will be brittle…and will flake off easily…so you would have to varnish it. If you are looking for a ground to paint on, you would do better with traditional gesso…not acrylic.

How to make a collage step by step? ›

What are the steps?
  1. Step 1 - Choose your collage maker.
  2. Step 2 - Identify the hero image.
  3. Step 3 - Choose a layout and supporting photos.
  4. Step 4 - Edit for visual consistency.
  5. Step 5 - Find the right medium to print.

What is the best surface for mixed media collage? ›

A good foundation is key to any art project, but when working with mixed media, it's especially important to have a good base. While canvas is perfect for painting, and paper is prime for pencil, board is ideal for mixed-media compositions: it holds up to both wet and dry materials and won't crumple, pill, or dissolve.

How do you make a collage with different materials? ›

Tips to Make a Collage

Cut out photos from old magazines, newspapers, or picture books. Collect ribbon, fabric swatches, or other natural materials to add texture. Plan your design by laying out all the images on a sturdy piece of paper. Use white glue or a glue stick to secure all the photos and material on the paper.
