'Armed and dangerous' suspect shoots at occupied school bus during lengthy North Carolina pursuit, deputies say

HERE’S CAROL AND RASHAD WYFF NEWS FOUR AT SIX STARTS RIGHT NOW. CHANGES ARE COMING TO THE WAY YOU DIAL LOCAL PHONE CALLS. IT’S NOT A BIG DEAL. YOU DIAL THREE MORE NUMBERS. IT TAKES YOU ABOUT HALF A SECOND TO PUSH YOUR BUTTON ON THE PHONE. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW AHEAD OF A NEW AREA CODE COMING TO THE UPSTATE, GETTING HOTTER. STARTING TOMORROW, WE’RE BACK UP INTO THE LOW 90S FRIDAY. HOW LONG THAT HEAT WILL LAST UP AHEAD IN YOUR FORECAST. AN URGENT NEED SEEN BY ONE CAN MOVE THE HANDS OF MANY. WHAT YOU SEE RIGHT NOW IN THIS BLESSING BOX LIKELY WILL BE GONE WHEN I SEE YOU NEXT. I’M MAYA PAYTON AND ANDERSON COMING UP, I’M GOING TO TELL YOU HOW THE COMMUNITY IS WORKING TOGETHER TO MAINTAIN THIS LIFELINE DURING THESE HOT SUMMER DAYS. A CITY OF GREENVILLE INITIATIVE IS TURNING A YEAR OLD. I’M NATE STANLEY WITH WHAT CITY LEADERS SAY THEY’VE ACCOMPLISHED IN THE PAST YEAR. BUT FIRST, AT SIX, A NEW AREA CODE IS ON ITS WAY TO THE UPSTATE, STARTING NEXT MONTH, YOU WILL HAVE TO DIAL AN AREA CODE BEFORE MAKING LOCAL CALLS. OUR ISABEL MARK IS LIVE IN GREENVILLE WITH. WHY THIS CHANGE IS HAPPENING NOW. ISABEL. YEAH, YEAH. WITH THE POPULATION INCREASING IN GREENVILLE, THERE’S A NEW AREA CODE EIGHT, TWO ONE COMING TO TOWN. NOW, YOUR CURRENT AREA CODE WILL NOT CHANGE, BUT IF YOU GET A NEW NUMBER AFTER AUGUST 19TH, YOUR PROVIDER COULD ASSIGN YOU THE NEW ONE TO PREPARE FOR IT. A TECH EXPERT SAYS TO UPDATE YOUR CONTACTS TO INCLUDE THE AREA CODE, AND TO MAKE SURE THAT THAT YOUR ALARM SYSTEMS AND ANY OTHER AUTO DIAL SYSTEMS ARE UPDATED TO INCLUDE THE AREA CODE AS WELL. WHY NOT JUST GO AHEAD AND GET YOUR PHONE FIXED AND IF YOU DON’T WANT TO DO IT YOURSELF, GET YOUR NEPHEW TO COME IN AND PROGRAM YOUR PHONE FOR YOU AND GET ALL THOSE NUMBERS SET UP FOR YOU. WHEN IT COMES TO REACTIONS, I TALKED TO ONE PERSON TODAY WHO SAYS HE WAS READY FOR THE CHANGE. AGAIN, YOU MUST START USING THAT AREA CODE STARTING JULY 19TH IN GREENVILLE. IS BALL MARK WYFF NEWS FOUR. ISABEL. THANK YOU. LET’S TURN TO WEATHER NOW. THIS IS THE FIRST OFFICIAL DAY OF SUMMER, BUT THE HEAT IS ALREADY IN FULL SWING. A LIVE LOOK NOW FROM ANDERSON TO LAWRENCE JUST LOOKS HOT OUTSIDE. YEAH, YOU KNOW, IT FELT LIKE SUMMER TWO, THREE, FOUR WEEKS AGO. MAYBE IT’S BEEN HOT. METEOROLOGIST GRIFFIN HARDY IS HERE NOW. GRIFFIN THE HEAT CONTINUES THROUGHOUT THE WEEK, CORRECT? IT SURE DOES. YEAH. AND IT’S THE LAST DAY WHERE WE HAVE HIGHS THAT WILL BE IN THE UPPER 80S. AND THEN IT’S 90S FROM HERE ON OUT. SO IF YOU IT’S ONLY GOING TO GET HOTTER. AND IF YOU LIKE THE 80S. YEAH. AND TAKE IT IN ENJOY IT BECAUSE YEAH LIKE 90 ARE ARE HERE FOR TOMORROW AND FOR THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE. BUT AT LEAST FOR THE MOMENT 89 IN CLEMSON AND ANDERSON 85 IN GREENVILLE 88 OVER IN LAURENS AND UNION IT’S 86 IN SPARTANBURG AND GAFFNEY. WE JUST DIPPED DOWN TO 79 IN CULLOWHEE. THAT’S REALLY THE ONLY SPOT IN THE 70S IN OUR AREA. EVERYWHERE ELSE, IT’S IN THE 80S, INCLUDING ASHEVILLE AND HENDERSONVILLE. UH, THE GOOD NEWS IS, IS THAT THE HUMIDITY IS STILL RELATIVELY LOW. THAT’S WHY WE HAVEN’T SEEN MUCH OF ANY POP UP SHOWERS OR STORMS LIKE YOU NORMALLY SEE IN THE SUMMER. THERE’S NONE OF THAT IN THE CAROLINAS FOR THE MOMENT. A LOT OF RAIN STILL WITH THE REMNANTS OF TROPICAL STORM ALBERTO. UH, ROLLING ACROSS MEXICO. IT’S NOW IN THE PROCESS OF DISSIPATING. SO EVERYBODY SAY BYE BYE, ALBERTO. THAT’S. TODAY’S THE LAST DAY THAT WE’LL HEAR ABOUT IT. WE DO HAVE TWO OTHER AREAS OF INTEREST WE’RE WATCHING, WHICH WE’LL TALK MORE ABOUT IN THE FULL FORECAST IN THE MEANTIME, HERE’S YOUR 12 HOUR FORECAST, MOSTLY CLEAR SKIES TONIGHT. THE MOON WILL BE REALLY BRIGHT. IT’S ONE NIGHT AWAY FROM BEING A FULL MOON, SO GET SOME GOOD PICTURES OF IT. 79 BY 9:00 IN THE UPSTATE, 72 BY MIDNIGHT. UPPER 60S, EARLY TOMORROW MORNING. A TAD BIT COOL FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR, AND THEN MOSTLY CLEAR SKIES IN THE MOUNTAINS AS WELL, WITH LOW 60S. EARLY TOMORROW MORNING, WE’LL TALK MORE ABOUT HOW HOW EXACTLY HOW HOT EARLY NEXT WEEK WILL GET COMING UP IN JUST A FEW MINUTES. GRIFFIN THANK YOU. IF YOU ARE HEADED TO THE COAST THIS WEEKEND, LISTEN TO THIS. IMPACTS FROM THE SYSTEM OFF THE BAHAMAS ARE ALREADY IMPACTING BEACHES. AREAS ALONG THE COAST HAVE ALREADY SEEN WIND GUSTS TRIGGERING A SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY AND RIP CURRENT DANGER FOR THE CAROLINAS AND GEORGIA. SOME PRECAUTIONS TO TAKE INCLUDE IF YOU GET CAUGHT IN A RIP CURRENT, RELAX AND FLOAT AND DO NOT SWIM AGAINST THE CURRENT. BACK HERE AT HOME, GRIFFIN HAS ALREADY GIVEN US THE RUNDOWN ON THE HEAT THAT’S ON ITS WAY, AND ANDERSON COUNTY COMMUNITY MEMBERS ARE TRYING THEIR BEST TO KEEP A DAILY WATER SUPPLY FOR THOSE IN NEED. THESE HOT DAYS ARE INCREASING THE DEMAND AND IT’S HARD TO KEEP UP WITH. NEWS FOUR’S MAYA PAYTON JOINS US NOW IN ANDERSON COUNTY, WHERE SOME SAY IT’S IMPOSSIBLE TO KEEP A LASTING SUPPLY. MAYA. YEAH. RASHAD. KARA I’M SURE YOU CAN AGREE WITH ME THAT ON A HOT, SUNNY DAY LIKE TODAY, NOTHING SATISFIES LIKE A SIP OF WATER. AND IT’S SOMETHING THAT MANY OF US MAY TAKE FOR GRANTED, BUT NOT HERE IN ANDERSON COUNTY. NOW, SINCE 4:00, I’VE BEEN SHOWING YOU THIS BLESSING BOX. THE MINI STAGES OF IT AS WELL WILL BE FULL, THEN EMPTY AGAIN, THEN FULL, THEN EMPTY AGAIN. AND RIGHT NOW YOU SEE WHAT MANY ARE EYEING THE MOST. THE WATER. NOW WE’LL KNOW THAT THEY’LL BE GONE IN A FEW MINUTES. RIGHT HERE ON WEST WHITMIRE STREET. THERE IS A LARGE HOMELESS PRESENCE WITH RESOURCES SUCH AS SALVATION ARMY, HAVEN OF REST MINISTRIES, AND HOPE MISSION. I’M TOLD BY A FEW OF THESE ORGANIZATIONS THAT DAILY WATER SUPPLY IS TOO BIG FOR JUST THEM TO CARRY. THE FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF ANDERSON HAS A BLESSING BOX THAT KEEPS WATER AND FOOD. BUT JUST AS QUICKLY AS IT COMES INTO THE BOX, LIKE I SAID, IT QUICKLY LEAVES. THAT SPEAKS TO THE GROWING NEED. CHURCH AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS SAY THE BOX IS A LIFELINE FOR THOSE WALKING IN THIS AREA DAILY, AND THEY ARE HOPING OTHERS WILL HELP IN THEIR EFFORTS. WE HAVE AN INSTANT YESTERDAY WHERE I HAD TO CALL 911. I WAS SERVICING THE BOX AND ONE OF OUR REGULAR VISITORS HERE ON THE STREET HAD SUCCUMBED TO THE HEAT AND WAS PASSED OUT IN FRONT OF THIS BUILDING. HAD TO CALL THE 911 TO GET SOME SERVICE. LIKE I MENTIONED MENTIONED HOPE MINISTRY IS JUST A BLOCK AWAY AND THEY TOLD ME THAT. DAILY 100 TO 150 HOMELESS INDIVIDUALS COME IN ASKING FOR WATER. BUT THEY ALSO TELL ME THAT THAT IS WAY LESS THAN WHAT THEY ACTUALLY KNOW. THAT IS IN THE COMMUNITY. AND ANDERSON, I’M MAYA PAYTON, WYFF NEWS FOUR. MAYA, THANK YOU.
